      • Just spotted my sweetcorn seeds sow by date was dec last year. Hat do you reckon - do I chance it or is sweetcorn one that always needs fresh seed?

        • I'd chance the sweetcorn but sow extra as it probably won't all germinate. The seeds should last a couple of years I think, but less if the packet has been opened.

Pre-sprout them between two layers of damp kitchen roll. Left somewhere warm (25-30c is ideal) they should sprout within 72 hours. If they still show no growth after 5 days they're definitely dead.

                • I have sowed old Beth alpha seed but have a packet of la diva too in case the oldies fail.
Today I filled remaining roottrainers with sweetcorn rising sun and pea marouby de mausanne. As a couple of the alderman peas appear to have rotted as they came through, probably me overwatering, I have put some to chit as back up.

                      • Sowed three varieties of tomatoes this afternoon.
Darby Stripe because it didnt germinate first time.
Sweet Aperitife because I forgot about it.
Urbakiny, just to try something different.

All my other tomato seeds have germinated and are growing well so far.

And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
