My guess , from the irregular shape , is earwig damage....
Interesting. I didn't know they were even a problem, apart from being worried as a kid they would crawl into my ear and eat my brain (so my big sister told me}
Looked around a bit and I think we might have been having problems with them more widely.
I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."
