Am using root trainers for the first time to grow my peas and sweet peas. After the mice ate all my autumn sown sweet peas I resowed and recently also sowed some douce Provence. Feels like germination is more patchy then usual and they seem to be taking longer than usual to appear. A few of the sweet peas have appeared then wilted and died. Am wondering it it is just that the root trainers are deeper than the posts I usually use so taking a bit longer to show? also temp is very variable right now. It’s an unheated greenhouse so going close to zero at nights sometimes and with the sunny weather getting quite hot some days. Thoughts? I had been trying to stagger sowing my peas as I tend to get a glut so was starting this month with douce Provence and planning to put the Adelman in in April. Could wait and sow direct but I like to get them going.

The swings in temperature could well be causing the problem. I don't grow sweet peas but I find with the edible sort they germinate much better indoors at this time of year - this also keeps the mice off. Douce Provence is an early variety so once it is germinated it should be fine in an unheated greenhouse, but if it is getting very hot in there maybe some shading would be helpful.A life is like a garden.
