  • Asparagus through!

First spears of asparagus just poking through.
I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."

Same here, they're early for us so probably be a while before growth starts in earnest.

Yeh, we usually get a few front runners through early. It is a reminder to me to get some fertiliser on though.

          Nice one Q…enjoy!

I actually spotted some in the supermarket today and treated myself ( cos I’m trying to diet and deserve something a bit special to help me on my way) yum.
I know - they won’t be half as yummy as freshly cut home grown though.

We also buy asparagus out of season but it does cause some air miles guilt when the small print says

Ha - cut the first four spears today and ate them raw on the plot. Growth is still very slow though.
Also squished a few asparagus beetles.

The difference a warm weekend makes. Three spears poking their heads up.

Our first spears through too. So at least some of the crowns have survived the planting process.

Most of mine are up now, although none yet big enough to pick.
One plant at the edge seems to grow twisted every year, though. At first I thought it was just damage (most likely slug damage) to the emerging stems causing it, but since it consistently happens to just that one plant, I'm not so sure.

Great! Are they from mature plants?

A few are from three year old plants but most plants are about ten years old.
