  • Planting leggy brassicas out

Normally I plant my brassica seeds outdoors in a seed bed. In the past when I have started them in the greenhouse I have invariably fried them. This year however I decided to start them off indoors. They are now looking leggy. Can I plant them deep, in the same way that I would with tomatoes, when I plant them out? Are there any downsides to this?

Yes, that's what I do, I always plant them up to the first set of leaves, they grow away fine.
Nestled somewhere in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Good soil, strong winds and 4 Giant Puffballs!

I always plant mine deep, too, as mine also get rather leggy before planting. Never does them any harm. They won't root along the stem like tomatoes will, but it does help to anchor them better.

Contrary to the advice given by certain authorities, any vegetable plants can be planted out deeper than they were in the pot, with the stem buried. It never does them any harm, and many species will even root from the buried stem (including cucumbers, which you are often warned even to plant slightly proud of the soil).
