  • Beans not germinating

    hi

I planted runner & French beans 3 times now. twice indoors indoor cover, where they got too leggy, and once 2 weeks ago outside in my south facing garden and still nothing. What am I doing wrong? I've never had a problem growing either in the past.

It might’ve been too cold overnight for them to germinate. Sowing indoors on the windowsill you got germination, were they just too early sown, they grow so quickly sow some indoors now, they’ll take about five - seven days or something, but they will get leggy if left indoors for so long, mine usually lean against the glass eventually,it’s just timing it right for the temperature outside to plant out,it’s luck isn’t it I’ve only got eight plants at the mo,I sowed more yesterday on the windowsill, plenty of time for sowing more.

Have you tried digging the seeds up and having a look at them?
I've stopped sowing beans direct, as bean fly larvae always seem to get most of them (the larvae eat holes in the germinating seeds, but they don't do any harm to larger seedling started in pots then planted out).

Also, in my experience there is no such thing as "too leggy". If the plants are leggy, just plant them deep when you plant them out. I've had bean plants with 8 inches of stem between the soil the top of the pot the the first pair of leaves, and they've still been fine after planting out.
