  • After broadies

I’m thinking of putting sweetcorn in where the broad beans grew, what is best to ‘revitalise’the bed? ‘New compost, or soil enhancer, or even manure?

im never really sure ( hot bin compost was used on this bed before and broadies did v well)

Sweetcorn is is one of our 'big' crops, taking a full four to five metre square bed. Our usual rotation on these beds is

    February year 1
Potatoes with quite a lot of compost or cattle manure (a tractor scoop full)
Potatoes go on into autumn year 1/winter year 2 being dug as needed

    May year 2
    Spread 30gm3 13-13-13
    Sweetcorn until August/September year 2

    October year 2
    Spread 30gm3 13-13-13
    Autumn started onion sets

    July/August year 3
    Harvest onions
    Spread manure
Leave until February year 4 to start again as year 1

We fit in such as the odd row of minor crops: beans, courgettes, broccoli, and such on the edges or between of these main plots

I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."

We've followed broadies with sweetcorn too - just a quick top dressing of home made compost applied to the bed as mulch. This year we're following them with Radicchio, rocket and spinach.

I'll probably whack some of the squash plants I have in the greenhouse.

just a quick layer of whatever compost I have ready.
