  • Feeding tomatoes

    Please can I just check with you all about feeding tomatoes? I’ve just been ‘questioned’ by a ‘tomato expert’, as to why I only feed my tomatoes once a week, increasing to twice a week, when fruit ripening etc. I argued back that actually that’s what it says on the ‘bottle of Tomoritte’, was I wrong? He then says ‘no’ not wrong, but the makers of the feed should say feed daily?

    I grow about 20+ plants outside every year and they do very well, still using passata from last year, and have bags of frozen toms.

    Sorry, I’m just feeling a bit ‘miffed’ !

    Tomorite once a week here. Successful, good crops.

    Tried agricultural 13 13 21 one year but went back to Tomorite because I couldn't figure the dose rate properly.

    Edit: my take on experts

    Glendower:
    I can call spirits from the vasty deep.
    Hotspur:
    Why, so can I, or so can any man;
    But will they come when you do call for them?

    I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."

          I feed once a week on "feeding Friday" (it's the only way I'll remember to do it!). I tend to buy whatever food is available when I am shopping, Tomorite if on offer or I've also got Wilko and Asda own label. I have a seaweed feed too.
          Nestled somewhere in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Good soil, strong winds and 4 Giant Puffballs!

            I feed less than once a week maybe once a fortnight,I never remember when I’ve done it so have to wait a while in between. Can you imagine the amount of feed you’d get through using it every day,expensive….I think the makers of the feed would say to feed daily if that was the case because they’d sell more?

              I'm a bit haphazard about when I feed mine. Maybe once a fortnight or so? Usually a couple of days after I've tied them in to the canes. I don't use a specialist tomato feed. There's ash goes in the bed before the plants go in and then I use a multipurpose granular feed during the season. Seems to do the job, though I did used to get blossom end rot before I started adding the ash.

              If your plants look good to you, Dorothy, and you get a harvest that you're happy with, ignore him is my view.
