Butternut squash

Hi
I have a couple of questions concerning Butternut squash.
Can someone tell me please how many shoots from the main root I should be allowing to grow, as I have about 4 at the moment going off in all directions.
Also how should I prune the shoots for the best crop.

Don't prune them at all unless they are growing somewhere you don't want them to grow and smothering other stuff (and even then, maybe try to just redirect them first).
Squash a self-limiting, anyway, and when they feel they have set enough fruits will abort any further female flowers. And they want as much leaf as possible to feed the growing fruits with sugar.
