Seed potato supplies

I'm in the process of making some beds for next year and they should be finished shortly. I've got an idea of what I'll be growing, but hadn't really thought about potatos until i read some of the "posts" on growing them in bags etc.

That seems quite a good idea and i was wondering if anyone could recommend some potato merchants where i can get a good selection of seed pots.?

I'm presuming that I'll get a better selection from them than at the garden centre?

Also, are the containers more suited to growing "earlies" rather than "maincrop", or isn't their any real difference?

And finally........any recommended varieties? Charlotte and Osprey seem to have been mentioned recently as good "earlies" but are there any others people would recommend to use and, conversely, to avoid?

I know nothing about growing, its my first year. However I ordered mine from Thomson and Morgan. They do selections of five tubers of different varieties. Ideal for a small patch or bags. They are about £2.50 for 5

As I only have a small garden I only grow "earlies" in bags. The main benefit of these is you get your crop of new potatoes in June and you avoid the worst ravishes of the dreaded blight I then do a second batch of "earlies" in late August, which I transfer to the Greenhouse in October to get a crop for Xmas.

For the last couple of years I have used Swift Early from Marshalls and found them pretty good, both in terms of taste & yield

Do you have access to an allotment trading post - ours are selling seed pototoes at
65p per kilo - a real bargain! The shop only sells to members of the plot's association but on the next door allotments local gardeners can join the association.
