  • Pea moth in mangetoute

I have had these pestilent caterpillars in my mt this year. Only noticeable in later pickings.

    is this usual?

I always get pea moth in my later peas unless I net them. They usually start around early to mid July and I've stopped growing mangetout because I really don't like the idea of eating pods that might have pea moth in. As the moths lay the eggs some time before you find the caterpillars, its best to grow them under fine insect mesh. They can self pollinate so that is not an issue.

Like Pen says the only thing is to net, sometimes you can get away by sowing either an early of a late crop.
