  • Autumn sown Garlic/Onion sets

Advice needed! I have to have an operation very soon which will leave me unable to garden properly for around 3/4 months. Hubby also has to have an operation which will leave him incapacitated for around 6/8 weeks. This means the chances of getting the ground prepared and the garlic/onions/shallots in this side of January are somewhere between nought and zero.
    My thoughts are to

1/ to use some of the module trays (5 x 3) and plant up in those. I can leave them in the cold frame until spring, hopefully?
2/ to use some 3" plant pots and do the same as above

What's the better option or do any of you wise ones have a better plan?

I always start everything in modules or pots, including onion and garlic sets. I sit mine in an unheated greenhouse or a sheltered spot outside, all depends on what else I need space for.
Wishing you and your husband speedy recoveries from your operations.
Nestled somewhere in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Good soil, strong winds and 4 Giant Puffballs!
Always aim for the best result possible not the best possible result

Do you find the modules or the pots the better option and when do you get to put them in their final positions? Thank you for your good wishes too, must admit we're not looking forward to the enforced restrictions on gardening

You're very welcome, hopefully you'll both be back to full vigour just at the right time, think of it as a well-earned rest.
I am notoriously late/behind with everything in the garden so am probably not the best person to give advice on times and dates
For example, this year I had some autumn planting shallots which I forgot all about, finally remembered them and popped them into little modules, just to keep them alive, they stayed in them till quite late Spring I think, when they finally got planted, they grew on really well until the dry summer and I couldn't keep up with the watering needed, but they split into nice little bulbs and would have been fine.
Garlic, I always start in modules and then plant when they look big and strong. Onions again start in modules then depending on how behind I am I might then pot them on into 9cm pots.
I generally don't have much in the ground overwinter and ideally plant them out Mar time, (I'm a bit of a fair-weather gardener) but I have also planted out much much later up to May! I figure as long as they are looking good in their pots they'll romp away in the ground once they get their feet in.
        Good luck
