  • No heads on my calabrese

    Hi

i sowed my calabrese (not sprouting broccoli) at the beginning of May in modules and planted out middle of June into my heavy London clay. The plants are looking great, but no sign at all of any heads forming. It's supposed to be a "normal 120 day" calabrese, so I would have thought there would be some sign of heading after ~150 days from sowing.

Should I just be patient, or can I look forward to spring greens instead of calabrese? How would I encourage heads to form?

Not sure I can be of great help, but last year I had some calabrese plants that were very late, but they did eventually flower. Even if they are "blind", ie with no central bud (which can happen if a slug or caterpillar has eaten it), they should produce some sideshoots eventually.

        Hi Penellype

this does seem to be the issue - they are just being very slow. This weekend there are two or three 50p sized heads, and a few sprigs that have flowered. So it does seem that patience is the necessary virtue here!

        many thanks

Some of mine are at about that stage too, others have already produced a central head. I think the hot summer has confused them.
