  • Onion Recommendation

    Hi all,

Currently in Madeira and the onions in the meals are sensational. So big, crispy and so sweet.
Just wondering if anyone could recommend a similar variety that I could grow in the UK?
    Thank you

Sweet Spanish onions are difficult to impossible to grow in this country.
Part of the problem is that they really need warmer summers than we usually get.
But the biggest problem is that our soil here simply has too much sulphur in it. Sulphur compounds are what give onions their tang and pungency, and what make them sting your eyes. If you try to grow sweet onions here then they won't be sweet; they'll end up just like any other onions.
You may have some luck if your soil is alkaline, though.

You could try a few as an experiment. I bow to Ameno's greater experience and knowledge, but I have to say that on occasion I've even sprinkled mine with sulphur when necessary and I didn't notice any difference. I suspect the ones you're after are something like the ones in the link below, which is what everyone round here grows over the summer. They're the usual salad onions here and they will grow to whopper size. They really don't store very well, so start using them as soon as they're of a useful size or you fancy one, don't leave them all to pick at the end of the season as you'll end up chucking loads away.

I'd follow MoreVeg's early start recommendations if you can provide them with suitable conditions.
