  • Dying tree Kale

Well, I have absolutely no idea why this tree kale has decided to die after a not too harsh Winter. In fact brassicas like frost. I have had a few fresh green shoots from this a few weeks ago. This was only planted out last year and I have had success with them previously in all weathers. Is it worth pruning to encourage it to grow ?

It looks like my broccoli plants after a hard frost.
Also, not too harsh a winter? It went down to -5 or -6 where I live for several nights in a row. It was far colder than it usually would be.

One of my Daubentons perennial kales did not survive the cold temperatures either, I think some varieties are just more frost sensitive than others. The Taunton Deane was fine.
And the temperatures did go down lower and for longer than is usual in London.

Morning. I'm a bit late posting on this topic but I had 3 Taunton Deane - they were huge - they got frozen and the tissue damage on the stems caused collapse - the leaves looked fine. I took leaf cuttings some of which are looking ok.
I too thought they would survive overwinter but if the stems freeze it's game up.
I left the frozen ones in the ground and will wait and see if they grow from the base
