My husband commented last night that the carrots in the dinner had a really strong carrot flavour. They were the last of the stored garden carrots from last year. Just thinking what else do people grow that really tastes different from shop bought. The other one that I would suggest is tomatoes - no comparison.

What tastes different from the garden?

I'll tackle this the other way round: the only thing I think doesn't taste better is long-storage onions.
Sweetcorn is miles better than shop bought. Everybody loves first early potatoes. Courgettes have a much better texture plus flavour. Even cabbages are sweeter!
Out of interest - and sorry because it's off topic - how do you store your carrots?

I find that fruit, especially, tastes better from the garden. Strawberries, raspberries, plums, apricots. Softer fruits usually have the most noticeable difference, as those fruits are intentionally picked underripe for the supermarkets to reduce the risk of bruising. Tomatoes, too.

Totally agree with you all.
A few years ago we had some clients from Paris who asked if they could possibly have some of our courgettes so we passed them a knife and told them to help themselves.
They came over a few minutes later and said none of them were ripe …
Urmmmm…..so we went and had a look with them and they said that none of them were bendy enough yet
It was really difficult not to burst out laughing but poor things had been sold old produce for years in the shops.
Very tactfully we suggested that the harder ones were actually more tasty, and they were absolutely enthralled by their flavour.
Bit sad really isn’t it?

Fresh berries picked warm in the summer sun, can't be beaten. Apples wet with Autumn dew, so much crunchier and full of flavour, you just can't buy that kind of freshness in the supermarkets. Fruit, to me, is a rewarding and worthwhile inverstment.
I agree with everyone else about carrots, toms, sweetcorn etc.
I also love growing PSB and Sprouts especially because all the young leaves and even the flower buds/stems are so deliciously sweet and tender, they are so much more than just the bits you get in the shops.
Home grown anything is just betterNestled somewhere in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Good soil, strong winds and 4 Giant Puffballs!

Everything, but if I had to pick only one thing it would be fresh peas. You simply can't buy anything even vaguely similar in the shops.A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP. - Leonard Nimoy
