It's cold out there at night, though.
Consistently warm-ish temperatures are a lot better for seed germination and seedling growth than hot days buy cold nights.

Ok, fair enough but I can assure you our house can feel colder than outside presently as old single layer brick houses seem to keep an even temp. Gret in summer though!

Marb, I use those clear containers too when I can.
Not just because I feel better because it’s recycling/ repurposing them but also it gives you a good view of the state of the root systems and also how wet/ dry the deeper layers of compost are ( avoiding over/under watering)

I always thought that the roots exposure to sunlight would be harmful.

Not had any obvious effect on mine. They are negatively phototrophic aren’t they? ( growing away from light) I only really see mine at the bottom which tends to mean they are ready to pot on.
I suppose if you were really concerned you could wrap a bit of something around the outside of each pot?

I don’t think there is a problem with using clear containers for seed sowing. I use them for a range of seeds and are fine. I like the ones for grapes that have a lid, have used them for salad showings.

Well I have just sown some more toms and peppers in some and placed in a plastic container with a plastic bag covering it to keep in the humidity, and a hot water bottle underneath for fast germination.

I've always used those clear fruit containers, they last for ages and like people have said let you see when they need potting on when the roots reach the bottom as its darker there plus you can see when they need watering easier. They were started off in a heated propagator but taken out soon as the first 3 or 4 seeds start to appear else they can possibly get 'leggy'. That window sill is not cold as its the kitchen window the double glazing is fairly new, the cavity walls have been injected and when its cold the central heating has been left on at night but just to stop the house 'chilling out' with the thermostat set at low.

With them being put there they aren't weak but seem to be slowly developing their proper first set of leaves which is best for them as oppose to galloping away creating a weak and leggy plant.

I've just had to resow half a tray of various Toms as none germinated, despite them all being new seed packets. The other half of the tray with old seeds all came up. Sometimes there is just no understanding the weird and wonderful world of gardening

I've had terrible trouble germinating peppers the last couple of years. I sow them several to a pot on a heat mat and until a couple of years ago I had no problems, usually getting 100% germination unless the seed was old. This year I have one plant from 6 seeds and I have sown 6 more a couple of weeks ago, with no show yet. I am going to try the tissue method to see if that is any better. The seeds are new so they should be ok.

I am sowing tom seeds that are as much as ten years old (as well as new ones) as they are still sealed in their packets

They are all coming up now. I'm flabbergasted as I had totally given up on them

I am down to four sweet pepper seedlings. They have not at all been happy indoors with no central heating. Normally they would have lived on top of the radiators…just goes to show - a slight tweak of the heating and they are sulking

What I have been doing is taking them into the cold (very warm when the sun is shining) greenhouse in the day and it seems to have brought them on. Then I take them indoors at night.

So did mine! Well not all them but I am now at 17 little seedlings and counting ...

So glad your tomatoes have finally come up Marb67 mine did the same after I sowed their replacements! Always the way isn't it!
