Well, after years and years of trying to grow this seemingly easy root veg I have failed yet again with thin, wispy pathetic growth from brand new seeds.

I just give up!

How deep is the container?

If they're growing like that, they definitely don't. They only go like that in response to insufficient light.
I also notice that there is moss or some sort sort of alga growing on the surface of the compost. This would not happen in any pot in full sun.
Maybe it's just full sun at head height, but down where the pot actually is it's shady for a fair part of the day?

It's on a table in the middle of the garden which gets the most sun all day but of course the sun is now fading every day and our small garden gets zero direct sun in Winter until mid Feb. There is a pollytunneel near the plot I grow so perhaps sow some more in that?

Then you're doing something else wrong as they have germinated, so they should be growing better than they are, I assure you.

You could cut all the leaves,wash them & put in a cheese sandwich then call it a success. They do look leggy,lack of light,you could try putting a little compost around each seedling so they’re not leggy,carefully round the delicate stems,gently just putting the compost in so the plants can straighten & feel secure.
