How many potatoes?

Decide to spend the morning in the warmth and read latest Grow Your Own. On page 6 at the end of the article it says 2.5 Kilos from two seed potatoes but then on page 19 the GYO tip box says 1 kilo from a 30 meter row. ???. How many on average do you get from yours?

About a Kilo or more per plant, depending on variety sounds about right!

i would like to think that 2.5 kilos is right for 1 kilo per 30 meter row is not much and it would take one huge plot to get a good amount of potatoes. i think that the 1 kilo per 30 meter row is how much seed potao to use for every 30 meter row and not the end product.

It would take you approx 10 potatoes to plant 3 metres which wouldn't be far off 1kg give or take a couple of potatoes.
I would guestimate an average of 10 potatoes at 125-150grams per potato planted depending on weather,soil type and conditions.

I figured 4 plants, maybe six if i was lucky?

I think you could sneak 6 in. 4 if you want them to grow really big.

Are you thinking of growing earlies or maincrop Bride? If earlies you could plant them 12 inches apart and 12 inches between rows this would allow you to plant 12 seed pots in your bed!

Thats about the spacing I use in my 4 foot beds but it's a lot closer than is normally recommended. Because earlies are usually pulled immature I usually find I can get away with it

And, you can pull earlies out of the soil and leave the plants to keep growing, rather than digging the full plant up. We just do that and get abut 6 weeks of earlies before they get bigger and they then become bigger mains.

oh don't start, it took Two Sheds about two hours to get that sorted for me, we came to the conclusion, before it got to the point of wanting to shoot me, that i should just stick em in and leave em till they were big enough to eat.

well the one plant i have in the greenhouse for xmas is a flower bucket i planted two tubers in it at about 5 inches deep, and as its grown i 'earth up' still going strong.not sure they wil be ready for xmas day, cos a started a bit late, but the fact i have two buckets still alive is showing willing

Soil and weather conditions probably influence yields to some extent and so does the variety.
As I mentioned on an earlier thread, we grew Desiree and Kestrel (a new-ish slug resistant variety) this year. The Desiree produced about 6x the original weight of potatoes that went into the ground, whereas the Kestrel produced about 3x.
