  • When to sow these veg for winter/overwinter

    Hi All,

This is my first year properly growing onions/brassicas. I am in the south of the UK and my first frost date is 21st Dec for my area, so I get a slightly longer growing season.
I am wondering when to sow these particular seeds in order to get a harvest in Winter (Dec/Jan/Feb) and a harvest in early spring (Mar/Apr/May)

    - Calabrese
    - Cauliflower

And also when is the best time to sow onion seeds in the south for the May/June harvest time next year.

    Thank you

I grow overwintering onions and sow mid to late august to plant out in mid october so they establish before it gets really cold. They were ready this year in mid June (Hi Keeper). I have also grown Senshu but the Hi Keeper seem to have stronger growth. I am in the south west.
    Hope this helps.

That's really helpful thank you. A few questions, if you sowed in mid July and planted mid September, do you think they would be ready mid May?
Do overwintered onions store well? I read somewhere they don't store as well as spring sown.

I will not be growing over wintereing onions as the results are not worth it, as for cauliflower there is an all year round veriety which should do well in your area, as for calabrese it's better sown in spring, if you are looking for a spring harvest you could sow purple sprouting broccoli but sow them now, it's not a vegetable that I grow as it takes up too much space.
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Hi Keeper is supposed to store well but I grow them to use before the main crop so they are only kept for a couple of months. I also don’t know and am rather doubtful whether they would be ready in mid May if you sowed now as I think onions are sensitive to day length to reach maturity and mine didn’t start to bulb up until the late spring and the longer warmer days.
