  • Broad Beans

Hi i'm new to your community and this is my first time growing broad beans and just have a few questions...

    1. in my picture circled in red is this little green thing lost possibilities [evidence of unpollinated flowers]?

    2. i have pinched the tips and have harvested and have more to harvest...but now that i've pinched the tips, is that it for any more flowering?...it won't push out any more lateral stems and a new flush of flowers for later in the season?...just wondering about whether i will be pulling the plant after my last harvest or at the end of the season...

any guidance you can pass my way about broad beans is much appreciated...thanks, jelly

      1. That little green stem is where flowers have fallen off unpollinated, yes.

      2. Broadbeans don't produce lateral shoots. Sometimes they will produce whole new stems from the roots, but any crop you get from them would be quite small. If you have nothing to replace them with then you may as well leave them in and see if they do start shooting from the base, but if you do have something else in mind then it would be better just to pull them out and replace them now.

Ameno, thank you for the clarity...i only planted 10 seeds this year to see how they grow and how i like them...my variety was a shorter one so my harvests haven't been big by any means...if i wanted to have an abundance of broad beans i'm seeing that a taller variety and a bigger space/bed might be needed next year...thank you for your help i think i will pull them and plant celtuce in their place, or something else and hope for a warm autumn...
