Yesterday & today I tried pruning the flowering currant & a bee chased me away, flying at my head, happened last year with the forsythia,I can’t touch it now,I don’t know if there’s a nest,it’s where I wanted to plant out so I just did it at about 7pm while they’re in bed,I planted out my sweetcorn (12 plants) with two honey bear squash & a courgette nearby. Earlier I planted out three more tomato plants, orange banana, blue ambrosia with a lilac petunia & black trifele with a red marigold, the bees came up to me a couple of times on the patio earlier & they seemed alright that I was far away from the flowering currant, they left me alone, didn’t chase me indoors again I need to be careful & give them space.Location : Essex

I had a buff tailed bumble bee nest under the tool shed on my allotment several years ago.
They were no problem at all. They did bump into my legs as I walked past the nest entrance while they were flying. They just simply pushed there way around me and carried on. No stings.
They could sometimes be heard humming under the floor.
One or two flowers got pulled down by the weight of bees on them but most were strong enough.
A couple of bolted leeks on the plot next door looked like balls of bees.
Near Worksop on heavy clay soil

I took my pieces of rotten raised bed away from the bed, there was slugs & loads of woodlice in it,it’s all open now,I weeded the area & planted two bloody butcher tomatoes in the space & a french marigold & four foxgloves. Thinned the apples on the tree. Pruned one of the shrubs.Location : Essex

Saturday: A bit more bench trellis painting but could only find a teeny brush so lost the will after a while. More weeding (wish the plants grew as fast!) including a bit of the path the next door plotholder is supposed to be responsible for (mostly to stop the weed seeds dropping onto our plot). Guided a few of the beans to their supports & helped out the broadies with a bit of string to their canes just in case. Spotted & squished a few blackfly on the broadies but they thankfully only seemed to be on a few plants. Planted out some Calendula to fill the bare soil around the blackcurrant & the few leftovers went into the front of the squash/cuc pots. Noticed the Gigantes Bean leaves looking a tad yellow so gave anything that flowers/fruits some tom feed.
Sunday: Strawed the strawberries. Good bit of hoeing & some more weeding (OH on his knees to get between the brassicas without taking off all the net bless him). Sowed a few short rows of carrots. Propped up one of the dalek compost bins that had started to lean precariously toward the fence because we've overfilled it - job for next weekend will be to empty it & hopefully there'll be some good compost at the bottom to take out. Stuffed a milk bottle with comfrey leaves & topped off with water to make some feed (thanks for the low-smell tip Florence Fennel )
Edit to add: also planted out some Sunflowers on Saturday & on Sunday squirted the blackfly on the broadies with some washing up liquid/water spray.Last edited by Andraste; 11-06-2024, 09:46 AM.Location: SE Wales about 1250ft up

I put the first runner bean teepee up today next to my sweet corn (rained overnight ) & I’ve planted the five longest plants that are a meter long at least, the rest of the beans can wait a bit,it’s been raining on & off all day. I potted up the first sweet pepper, two more tomato plants with marigold & one with petunia (salisaw cafe & German lunchbox tomatoes). Earthed up the main crop potatoes.Location : Essex
