Thanks. Great recommendations, smallblueplanet. Depending on how much veg patch I can use this year, I'll add a patty pan squash, then.

I grew acorn squash one year. Not the next. I think that says it all. I grow Barbara every year. And the seeds aren't cheap. So that says it all too.

I went to buy some but checked the seed box first, I've got some already!
ps the free delivery code that is out of date still works TM_TN4625W

I don't live in the UK, sbp, and post-Brexit I can't import seeds from Britain any more. There's a huge market for plug plants in Spain, but next to no seed suppliers. So for a decent selection I have to buy from France or Ireland. Costs me an arm and a leg in postage. And seeds from the supplier in France with the biggest selection, including Barbara, are quite expensive. Seven euros for 25 seeds for Barbara. Fortunately, Barbara will last but similar prices for other seeds.

Edited to add: Containergardener, Andraste you might find the free delivery code mentioned by smallblueplanet useful. Ridiculous paying full price for delivery if you only want a packet or two of seeds.

..and another vote for Uchiki Kuri. We had about 20 buternuts this year, they did really well, and one of the other plot holders offered a swap for one of her glut of Uchiki Kuri. Both me and Mrs G thought it was probably the richest flavoured squash we'd had. Didn't keep very well though, went to eat the other half of it 3 days later and it was a little mouldy even though it was kept in the fridge. Will still be growing it this year though.

You should do fine with something in the species Cucurbita maxima (which most of the varieties recommended here are).
Best to avoid Cucurbita moschata, though, which cover butternuts and a small number of others (like the Black Futsu someone posted), as they need a warmer, longer season.

I recommend growing a winter squash variety that can be cut off the vine green/unripe and ripened in the house. Here’s a video of the winter squash I grew - showing the unripe dark green and then the color change where it turned orange after a few months of storage in the house. They taste sweeter then too! They apparently can be stored up to a year. Past a year I wouldn’t risk as there’s a chance it could deteriorate. https://www.instagram.com/reel/C-GxwBUqQcE/
