  • Tomato feed

What do you feed your tomatoes with, I was using a comfrey /nettle feed and decided to switch to a feed made with banana skins, just to see if there was any difference in growth or taste, growth of the tomato plants is good and look healthy, but taste is not so good, before the trial the tomatoes were to me, nice and tasty, now they are not so nice, so will be back to using the confrey/nettle feed, fortunate using the feed will change the taste quite quickly, having run a trial in the past where I fed one basket of tomatoes using a comfrey feed every three days, against simply watering the other basket the deference was very noticeable, but once I started feeding them both with comfrey the taste improved quite quickly, what do others feed their tomatoes with and what in your opinion makes the tastiest tomatoes
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Hmm, I hadn't considered that the feed used would affect the taste (not sure why as its fairly obvious!). I start mine off in bought compost that has feed added, usually seaweed based. I then pot on adding bfb if I am using home made compost and feed with Tomorite or similar when I remember. I tend not to feed tomatoes planted outside in the ground unless they look like they need it, although they do get bfb when planted. In general I would say that the ones planted in the ground taste better than those in pots in the greenhouse, and the ones in the greenhouse (usually planted in home made compost) tend to taste better than the ones in the house (in bought compost).

Maybe I should try making my own feed again - last time I tried it was a complete disaster!

My toms are planted in the GH border in a mix of garden soli, dalek compost, leaf mould and council soil conditioner. They're fed alternately with Comfrey and store bought Tomorite type feed.
I've always grown them this way so I have nothing to compare them with.

My tomatoes have seaweed fertiliser in the early months & vitax tomato feed in the summer. I have used only seaweed before with some Epsom salt & that was fine. I always like the taste of my tomatoes 🤔😏
