  • Storing seed potatoes before chitting

Hello everyone! Hope you're all well.

This year, I've decided to order my maincrop seed potatoes early. I always leave it to the last minute and I'm always disappointed that everywhere has sold out of my favourite varieties. Anyway, what is the best method of storing them before I start to chit 'em? I've searched on the Interweb and I find some sites that say store them in the "dark"; some sites that they say store them in "light".

So, I thought I'd ask you guys. What is the best way of storing these little beauties before I start to chit, and should it be in a cold room too?

Any help that you might be able to provide would be very much appreciated.

The fridge is the best place if you have space.
If not, somewhere cool and light (the shoots will grow long in the dark).

Think I'd be chitting them by now if I were you.

Mine have been chitting in the (unheated) utility room for a fortnight, but I'm in a warmer part of the country, so my First Earlies go in on St Patricks Day and the Maincrops go in on April Fools. (No significance to those dates by the way, I just plant on dates I'll remember!)

No location on your profile so can't judge your planting times to advise properly about chitting time.

I ‘store’ mine by just starting them off chitting in a few cardboard egg boxes.
I’ve had to cut them out of netting bags too many times in the past trying not to knock off long chits.
Cool and nice and bright and they will very slowly chit away. Doesn't natter if they go green in the sunlight.
