  • Is anyone forcing their rhubarb?

I’ve often thought about doing this, but always been put off the idea I seem to have at the back of my mind.

It's the fact that forcing rhubarb weakens it?
Yes, I’m sure it does…but I understand that the plant dies after a couple or so years of doing this.

Because it’s so dry here, I really don’t want to have to try and start afresh with new plants as I’ve lost so many young plants and I really don’t want to be regularly watering them until they become established if the plants I already have hardly ever need watering.

So- what I’m getting to, is that one year of forcing presumably would be OK- especially if I didn’t pick all the leaves.
I have a tall cracked plastic dustbin I could use.

What does everyone else do? What does and doesn’t seem to work for you?

Any tips would be very much appreciated…thank you

I do. The Christmas before last I was given a rather lovely terracotta rhubarb forcer so I read up about it. You can force a crown every other year, or better still every third year. After picking the forced stems, the plant should be left to grow without more picking. So ideally you need at least three crowns to alternate plants each year. As this is only my second year I've yet to see how strongly last year's forced crown grows back.

Out of interest MH….how tall do the forced stems grow? I’m presuming to the top of the inside of the terracotta pot?
        How tall is that…18”/2ft?
