First Chilli seeds from Nickys

i read on the Seed Swap that someone was either offering or asking for some "Hot Lemon" chilli seeds. i'd never heard of them but did a bit of Googling and ended up a Nickys Seeds.

fantastic selection of chilli's and herbs - but not being that familiar with the co. i was a bit reluctant to order. But i used the GYO Search and found some old forum posts where Nickys got rave reviews, so i took the plunge and ordered. Got great service and would def. use again

They arrived today and i am the proud owner of:-

Antohi Romanian
Corno Di Toro Giallo
Leutschauer Paprika
Hot Lemon
Scotch Bonnet ( a freebie!)
and a token herb - Ajwain for my curries!

This just reminds me why i joined this forum. You get great inspiration for new things to grow, and when you read what other people do, it just give you the confidence to try somthing!!

I'm interested in just a few seeds for Corno Di Toro Giallo. Maybe I could swap you a few seeds for something interesting. I'll PM you and see what you think.

Wow - up early or bed late?

One question re the chilli seeds - they need to be sown at 25 -32 degrees. I know a heated propogater will be more accurate, but can i get by with just covering seed trays indoors? Or if i need "heated" does it need to be more thermostatically controlled? Again more accurate - but is it necessary?

I grew chills successfully last year by just chucking the seeds into a little pot in early march, then re-planting the seedlings into their own pots in around april. Then i put them outside in may and had hundreds of green, and eventually red chillis. They are surprisingly easy to grow!

I grew cayennes and they were very happy with a helping of neglect in 6 inch pots.

i never have, and have had very high germination rates, i just put them in modules in the windowsill indoors, pot off when they are big enough, and then they go out into the cold frame in late march early april.

I have never tried Nicky's seeds. It looks like a good place for seeds.

As for pepper seeds, they are easy to germinate, just treat them the same way as tender annuals.

Try your airing cupboard if you have one, to germinate your seeds, I'm sure I read that on a chilli website somewhere! It will save on the electric for your propogator, and the expence of buying one! once the seeds start to show their heads bring them into the light!

Chilies can be slow to germinate especially the hot ones like the scotch bonnet and other habanero's so have some faith and good luck!

Thanks all - info appreciated. I think I'll take the window sill approach. My conservatory starts getting the sun in Feb, and gets quite warm so thay can go there. i suppose I'll have to keep an eye on the temperature though just to make sure it doesn't get too cold. Is is that a lower temperature will just delay germination. i presume that once they have germinated they are quite tender, so if i keep them in a greenhouse or the conservatory will they be ok?

I know what you are saying about waiting for stuff to grow. I am getting frustraited waiting for spring so I can start things off!

I also have some lemon chili seeds from Nicky's, I went a bit mad and ordered quite a few different chili seeds from them a while ago. I got some chocolate and some white habaneros, also some purple jalapinos they also sent be some red scotch bonnet seeds as a freeby! I have a few self saved yellow scotch bonnet seeds at home. I ordered about 5 different types of tomato seeds from them as well. Great service fast and friendly!
