Skirret

Just got my Organic Gardening catalogue and see they have seeds of Skirret (Cousin of carrot!) I might give it a try as it's a perennial that is also suited to the flower garden as well!

Never grown it myself, but now that I've seen that info Snadger, it's definitely on my list of things to grow in Braemar. (It was the bit about how hardy that really caught my eye, at 1100 feet this far North it really makes a difference to what goes on the list ! )
My granny (who hailed from the highlands near Braemar) used to swear that it was lovely, and I remember her once bemoaning the fact that it and kale were two things that had fallen out of favour and just couldn't be had in the shops.

Kale is deffo IN favour with me..........I love it. it's very productive, very hardy and what I don't need the chooks relish!

Suffolk Herbs have them in stock. Probably too many in a packet so will advertise spares on seed swap in the New Year. Also bought Purslane and Lablab Beans. Saw them and could not resist. It's Snadgers fault I'm buying more seeds!

Well, just to keep you busy frosty.........here's another one I've ringed...........'SUPERSCMELZ, a kind of Kohl Rabi!.............. the size of a small football rather than a tennis ball. Pole green semi-globe shaped with crisp white flesh. Quick growth up to 8Kg!! yep you've read it right, up to 8 Kilo without becoming stringy!'

I've grown the usual Kohl Rhabi before but the 8 kilo Kohl I have to see!

Never heard of skirret! My stab at kohlrabi was less than impressive, they were the size of a golf ball!

Just tastes of cabbage.......just imagine 8 Kilo of solid cabbage flavouring...........would bring a whole new meaning to Kohl slaw!

Sorry resurrecting an old thread. Okay grew the Skirret seeds and taste of roots are parsnip-ish. However the flowers on the plants are lovely. I'm planning a mixed veg/flower bed, colour scheme is white and green. All I need is more Skirret seeds and everyone seems to be out of stock - including Pennard Plants. Does anyone know of a stockist?
