I'm sure it was. I've only just potted up a few of a variety that needs a long growing season. The rest are not even sown yet. They catch up.

Be aware, this is an Early Tomato Experiment - to see if we can get earlier tomatoes from just a few seeds. Most of us will sow our main tomatoes in a few months time.

Most of my seedlings are now 3" high with roots coming out of the bottom of the 3" pots.

They will be potted on in about 3 weeks and put into the tunnel borders in mid April.

My tomatoes (sown on 27th Dec) are in 3" pots and looking thin and leggy, but doing OK.

Today I sowed 15 seeds of Tumbling Tom.

It's my first time trying Tumbling, I only read of them on this site about a week ago.

This is my tumbler sown 15/1, it's doing great and has loads of really tiny flower buds. The ones I sowed after aren't doing nearly as well though, leggy and only half the leaves this one had at the same age. I don't know what I've done different

My Grushkova toms are doing fine - small, and sturdy. But my other toms went to compost bin today. Very poorly, started shrivel, no obvious signs of disease, compost was cold. Strange thing is my peppers are coming on great and not leggy. Both the peppers and toms are on my kitchen windowsill. So, can anyone tell me when is the next date for planting more toms?

That's odd, my peppers are doing fine next to leggy toms too!

I transplanted some of PW's seedlings today - toms and peppers - into modules.

I've given up, all mine died whilst I was on holiday despite giving them to my in laws to look after. It doesn't matter though, I've got about 2 million seeds to try again with. One surprise though, i put a few pepper seeds in at the same time and they are going great guns!

I've planted my Dec 27th toms into their final pots in the greenhouse. They are very tall, but the Tigerella have flower buds opening, the sunrise ones have flower buds in. The green tigers and french blacks aren't so tall, but haven't got buds either. I'm going to cover with fleece at night, but my 'test' one, which has been in the greenhouse for over a week, unfleeced, is looking fine. Whether I can keep them warm enough to set fruit at this time of the year is another matter. I just haven't got space for them inside anymore, they have grown too big. The chillies planted at the same time are looking very good, not leggy at all, obviously more immune to lower light levels.

I took my tom and pepper trays outdoors for the day yesterday [a little trip for them], and duly brought them in during the afternoon.

I looked out the window this morning and one tray of peppers [my tray sown in Jan] was still outdoors.

I rushed out and - they all look fine.

I take it that it was a warm night last night

Early sowing tomatoes now 8 inches high and very leafy. Quite a lot of variation amongst my seedlings, some twice the size of others? Anyway, they are now in the cold greenhouse and have been out for a few days and nights. I have potted the bigger half on into 5 inch pots, with the aim being to grow the best 6 or so 2 per growbag with rings to increase soil depth. The main sowing of toms has started, but realised that the greenhouse is going to be too full this summer!

I found the size of the seedlings varied depending on the variety, are yours all the same or different? As far as numbers are concerned, I've got about 30 , and only really got room for 8 .

I only wanted a couple to grow, so I picked the 2 biggest to pot on and the rest are in the bathroom [quite cool] being held back for when i have a greenhouse.
