  • Yours look good Barleysugar!

I've repotted mine up to their first leaves and put them under a blue 'daylight' bulb, which I'll probably leave on for about 12 hours a day.
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

    • Hi Zazen could you clarify something for me.

I am intending to sow a few toms, chillis and aubergines on the 24th January, is that the correct moon date as i am looking to try moon planting this year.

and can you start them off covered in plastic bags as i do not have a proporgator

      Many thanks

      • Sowed 2 each of Garden Pearl, Tamina and Roma tonight.

Not following the moon thingy as I find it too confusing and my energy levels don't always correspond to correct times for doing things.

Will muddle along as best I can and hope for better results than last year (won't be hard as we got 2 tomatoes to ripen last year)
        Happy Gardening,
        Shirley

        • I must have done something wrong! I planted 5 gardeners delight in multi purpose compost on 4 Jan. They are in a small propagator which is unheated but on a south facing windowsill. Still nothing has come up! The temperature is around 10 degrees, so maybe its too cold. Will have to dig out the heated prop. and try again. How long should I leave the first seeds before there is no hope? Any suggestions?

              Hi

All the moon dates for Jan are in the first post, I have checked and the 24th is a moon day for fruit.

I don't use a propagator, mine just go onto the fridge and by the kitchen window in the day until they are up.

Well, one of mine sown on 29th Jan just came up yesterday. I'd put yours somewhere warmer for a day or two, before you give up hope.

                • Don't give up hope...mine seemed to take a whole age longer than others to show...but they did!!Still noticing a few new ones popping up overnight!
so far~10 money maker(I think I over sprinkled!)
3 Gobstopper Minibel(one of which wasn't there yesterday!)
                  3 Beefsteak(looking very leggy)
and the most exciting as I had really given up hope...I can see 3 aubergines trying to poke through!!
Still nothing from the peppers...but not giving up on them yet!

                  • Toms and peppers from the 27/12 sowing just starting to make real leaves.

Shell, your toms won't germinate at 10 degrees. Until they have germinated they don't need to be on a windowsill so you could just move the whole thing to somewhere warmer and put them back on the windowsill when germinated.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

                    • Thanks everyone for your adivce. XXX

I have put them in a heated propagator at lunch time. I'll leave them there for a couple of days. But would you believe it !..... one little seedling had been brave enough to poke his head through when I checked this morning!!!

I'm back to being excited and won't give up hope on them just yet.

Will let you know midweek how I am going on.

                      • Shell, as soon as your toms have germinated remove them from the heat or they will be really leggy.
Put them in as much light as you can give them. The 10 degree windowsill you talked about before will be fine. Good luck.

all safe on light windowsill, not too leggy so far.

What would be the lowest temperature at which the seedlings would survive, after they have germinated and been removed from the heated propagator? I'm trying to balance maximum available light against lowest acceptable temperature
