Early Tomato Sowing and Growing thread - poll added please vote

Bride: usually a week or two.

Frosty, I wouldn't but if you have the seeds and the space, then go for it.

I sowed mine last year on the 8th Jan and got first red tomato on 8th June if that helps anyone in planning.

I am going to do this on the 5th. I will try with one each of my tomato seeds - a black one whose name I forget, a millefleur, one I saved from last year and an armish paste. I think i will start them off in the airing cupboard and then put them in the spare room. I will have to get other compost though because the stuff we have is full of flies.

didn't i read somewhere on here about microwaving compost? would that help?

oooo it might do. I could try one and see what happens. I can't face the tiny horrible flies that get in your eyes saga again.

I forgot yesterday (was watching Mama Mia and having a singsong), so today I have sown:
4x GartenPerle
4x Harbinger
4x Tumbling tom
4x Sweet Million
4x Black Cherry
4x Incas
4x Tigarella

Into propagator (not on at mo) on kitchen windowsill. Used John Innes Seed compost, and used luke warm water.

Just sown:
6 x Grushovka Tall Bush Tomato
6 x Purple Ukraine Large Purple Vine Tomato
6 x Aurora Large Bush Tomato
6 x Gelbe Kirshen Early Yellow Cherry Chilli Pepper

Sown in mini root-trainers [which I bought myself for christmas], 3 to each cell.

Sown into Bulrush multi purpose compost

Watered from the bottom - lukewarm water, using the lid to put the water into.

Will be left on the kitchen windowsill until large enough to prick out into little pots.

Will put outdoors on warmish days to start hardening off as soon as possible.

let my compsot warm up it was what i had left from last year brought from wilkos

i have sown today in polystyrene(had to look this up in a dictionary to spell it...lol) this came in a package last year and we thought it was perfect to grow seeds in and we had quite a lot of seeds germinate in this too.

9 x tomato tumbling tom red
9 x tomato alicante

and i have also sown some peppers

9 x shop brought peppers seeds saved from those
9 x sweet corno di torro mixed

have placed on the kitchen windowsill

and watered all the seeds with lukewarm water with a green house water spray

Wilkos multi purpose compost.
Unheated propagator in airing cupboard and watered daily with a fine sprayer bottle.

Well as i were sowing my onion seed today i thought i may as well have a bash at growing a few early tomatoes too I have only opted for a couple of plants though as i will be sowing the bulk in about 8 weeks time.
Soooo...
1x Roma tomato
1x Shirley
1x sweet pepper 'Rubens' i think. (i saved the seed from shop brought pepper as suggested by 'Aunty Flummery') so lets see what i get

Sown into modules on the 28th December 2008, into B&Q peat free, multi purpose compost.

Going to join in too, will let you know, (off to root in my seed box!) Although, like Pigletwillie (and I noted what he said last year), early sown indoor toms in Jan/Feb last year did not better than my Mar/Apr ones, but I'm going to try the moon planting! Will let you know!

Hi I'm new to this but I am going to grow tomatos again this year but it sounds that all you guys have just sowed yours. Should I be doing this and if so what type and can they go in the greenhouse to start them off or should they be started off on a windowsill?

be aware, this is us, doing an experimental planting way earlier that you should be, if you have a few seeds to spare feel free to join in, but...........this is not the 'right' time to be planting tomatoes, which i believe is march

&Aubergine-Bellezza Nera...(always too late sowing these...so fingers crossed for at least one fruit this year!!)
All planted in Asda multipurpose,in small pots,in unheated propogator on windowsill...a "pinch" of seeds each.

(See post 4, I don't know if you can reference any other away). I moved the heated propagator from the windowsill to the table last night before going upstairs. This morning, it was on the windowsill, behind the curtain, turned off
The dear children had moved it to play monopoly last night, then son no2 wanted the electric for his laptop charger, so unplugged my propagator! It was really frosty, the garden has stayed white all day, so I hope this cold spell hasn't checked the seed germination too much.

me too! I have totally un-itchy fingers, having for years sown things far too early and lived to regret it.
