  • Mine are looking a little leggy, they are still on the kitchen windowsill - not got any 'brighter ones' esp as its been so dar here. What can I do to stop them getting too tall and spindly?

    • Jane - they need light. I'm repotting mine in a few days and they will be potted up to their first leaves in soil.

      • Extra light. Am wondering where I can put them. They look lovely and green and healthy, just look like they are starting to go leggy.

Maybe I can leave the kitchen undercabinet lights on ad pop them under there?

        • I don't think that's the right sort of light. When you pot them on, just plant them up to their leaves in the pot.

          • Ok, will do, thanks

Where will you put them once potted on?

(sorry if that's a daft question)

            • OK, can finally join the experiment. Sowed 6 x Gardener's delight and placed in sunniest position, on kitchen windowsill, 11.01.09. Temperature is ambient. No radiator in kitchen, but it is open to dining room and so averages around 20 degrees C.

              • Sorry been a touch busy last few days so not reported in on progress.
14 out of 16 toms planted have germinated, the last one appearing on 10/01/08.
They are all growing pretty well on the south facing front room windowsill, with a radiator underneath.
There is no real sign of legginess as yet, but will be repotting them within the week I should imagine and will pot up to the leaves as has been mentioned earlier.

Well, my toms and peppers go in the bathroom as it's nice and light there - right next to the window.

                    • Yeah - first pepper up.

I'm hoping to repot my leggy toms tonight as it is a fruit day today.

                      • I'm really pleased with mine, although I think they will need repotting soon. I don't know if it's the christmas lights, but they seem to have grown a lot in the last 5 days, and not as leggy as I would have expected them to be. I hope I can keep them going until April though!

The first picture I have posted before, but I've put it in again to show how much they've changed.

                        • Well done BarleySugar. Real leaves already. Mine still just have seed leaves, but they're looking well enough.

                            • Hi all,

on the 7th Jan I sowed

                              9x Tigerella
                              9x Gardener's Delight
                              6x Tomato 'Ace'

                              On the 9th Jan
                              9x Alicante
                              4x Marmande

I sowed them in multi purpose compost in modules and put them near the radiator with plastic over the top. They germinated in 4 days and are now trying to grow on the windowsill (with some foil behind to reflect the light).

I'll choose the best ones and pot them on

                              • I finally got a little bit organised and joined in. Madmax sowed 2 Shirley (wonder why?) in John Innes seed compost today. They are lightly covered with vermiculite and sitting in the kitchen. May get round to sowing more tomorrow.
