Youre brave Andrea, mine will be going in in mid March at the earliest. They dont start to produce bulb till after the longest day and if they keep getting swings of temperature, it encourages bolting.

All my sets have been in vending cups in my mini greenhouse over the winter. Decent sized shoots on them now - very nervous about planting them out.A simple dude trying to grow veg. http://haywayne.blogspot.com/

I have a new allotment on a river bank (it's also National trust property) where I began growing at the end of last Summer. My veggies start at about two yards from the river, but was told yesterday that I had to move everything back so that cultivation starts at 5 yards from the river. I am going to go down today to measure but I know that this is going to cause me to have to move or get rid of my Early white sprouting brocolli that just started to sprout, overwintering Japanese onions, overwintered shallots, overwintered garlic, overwintered broadbeans and leeks, and savoy cabbage that is almost finished,
Does anyone know if the alliums mentioned can be safely moved right now??Last edited by marigold007; 20-02-2009, 12:20 PM.

I have also planted my onion sets, when I opened the bag they were starting to shoot also there was one that had gone bad. So sorted the bag, threw away the manky one and planted the rest. Going to get some more sets just to be on the safe side, if I hadn't checked the bag I would have lost the lot anyway.

Sowed some white lisbon and red baron to use as small spring onions.
All others are doing wella and waiting to be potted on.
Also have yellow banana shallots coming up from a sowing a week ago.
And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I transplanted loads of onion seedlings sown last autumn, plus some garlics and shallots from the garden to the lottie. Plus put a few shallots in to use the space.
Neighbour lottie blokie told me today we've gone onion mad...little does he know I've put the other 170 odd sets in, plus the 100 odd seedlings today, and there's got to be another 200 odd seedlings to come.

Sowed more leeks for windowsill to replace the ones I threw round the room. Did another tray of spring onions in GH and put leftover seeds in warmed raised bed. No idea if either will work outside but hey ho, nothing ventured and all thatWPC F Hobbit, Shire police
