  • Hi Pepper

I started mine off in modules three weeks ago as my raised beds weren't ready. I planted them out on Wednesday along with the shallots and garlic - all had lovely big roots and I noticed the green tops were starting to show today.

        • I have just bought my onion sets. Can I put them straight in the ground or do I need to do something with them first. Sorry, this is all new to me :-)

          • Is your greenhouse heated or cold? If it's not heated, then plant them out and cover with fleece or cloche for a couple of days to acclimatise if you can. If the greenhouse Is heated, then you'll need to spend a week to 10 days getting them used to the cold by taking them out in the day and putting them back at night before you plant them.

            • Jillyreeves, Yes, you can put them straight in (the reason for prior rooting is to make planting out and establishment easier). Keep an eye on them over the first week or so, birds sometimes yank them out (the theory being they think they're worms though I'm not convinced birds are so dim, more likely they suspect worms will be underneath). Also as they grow roots they can sometimes lift themselves out so some might need replanting. But get them in soon, keep an eye on them and they'll be fine. b.
ps My sets from Wilko's put in a while ago are now several inches into growth but ones ordered from Marshall's before Christmas are still "to follow"... They were late last year, this year seems even worse, anyone experiencing similar delays?

              • I'll add this to the general Allium thread, so that you can have a look at what others are doing, and also other questions that have been asked.

                • A garlic question if you don't mind!

I've never grown it sucessfully before but this year it has been looking good until this recent warm dry spell down south. The council has cut our water off on the lottie for 4 - 8wks (they said 2 - 3 wks a fortnight ago but I know our local council works on never never time) and the poor beggers are very dry. They are in a raised bed and have yellowing leaf tips despite the watering I've been able to do.

Do they need a reasonable amount of water - are they ok or should I give up trying to grow garlic!

                  Thanks in advance - Jane

I've never watered garlic and only water-in most things when they are transplanted. If I've got water to do it, that is. Once they are in the soil its their problem.

Celery is an exception. Or a really really hot/dry spell [such as over a fortnight with no rain and +30degC].

                    • Thanks Zarzen - I'll leave them to their own devices and keep my fingers crossed, also I now know why half my celery seedlings have flopped and died (let them dry out, too many seedlings on the go at once).

Thanks again, 2 bits of helpful advice fore the asking of one

You'll find those sets will sprout in the bag and probably won't keep,to be honest I bung them in flower beds or under fruit bushes, where ever I find a space.

                          • we're still diggin over and weeding our new allotment.

Should I plant our onion and shallots into some seedling trays I've got spare so they can get started or wait and plant them out asap? Didn't want them to dry out.

                            • Planted my red onion sets last weekend. I have some spring onions I also would like to sow, need to check when they can go in.

Not trying shallots this year, although I might plant some garlic if space permits

                              • Has anyone planted out shallots that were sown from seed back in february yet? Please could you let me know when these should go out as I have never grown shallots before.

Mine have been in the coldframe for weeks, they have started to thicken up abit but look like they may need to be potted on. Help!!
