Growing Mushrooms - Anyone tried this

Was just wondering what was involved in mushroom growing and if anyone had tried it.

Can it be done outside, in open air, or in a cold frame, shed or green house. Where is the best place to grow them?

Has anyone tried ones that aren't on logs, for example straw, or ones grown directly on compost???

Really interested in what people have to say, so spill your successes/failures and any tips you have.

This thread was going a little while ago, you might find some information here. I've just 'cased' my mushroom box that I was given for Christmas, following the 10 days in the warm. It's in my understairs cupboard, a constant 16 degrees. Fingers crossed.

I had one of those box kits from B&Q years ago, it was really interesting, sorry but I know nothing else about growing outside etc.

I have grown mushrooms in hay, in boxes and my shittake drilled into a log near the comp heap. Best to read up and shop about.

btw. Wilkinson's have a mushroom kit in my branch .. I didn't look at the price though. I think it was by Unwins

I have tried twice now to grow mushrooms still no sucess obviously doing something wrong
what worse my mates dad part owns a mushroom farm still cant grow them though
I can get hold of plenty of spent compost though
