Potatoes - Anyone know what approx harvest to expect per plant....
Crop will vary from variety to variety and there will be a difference between earlies and maincrop but you could expect 1kg per seed potato if they are fed well. That is a safe estimate you could probably get more.
I noticed last year, that putting 4 seed spuds in my big containers didn't get me any more spuds than 3 did the year before - they filled the space they had & that was that.
I'm going to experiment this year, and just put one in. Then put the usual 3 into the other 2 identical containers, and see what happens
I depends so much on the soil conditions and the care you can give them. Last year I planted about 50 desiree seed potatoes in my allotment and had a few spare so gave them to my Mum. She planted in her garden which has excellent soil after years and years of composting. I got about three good size spuds per plant, which is way under what most will say, although my soil is clay and little or no compost. My Mum however, had more like ten which is a very good crop! Consider this before you decide how many seeds to buy.
