    growing potatoes-sideways

I ahve read my instruction manual!) they sort of grew them on their side so the top bit spread across the plot. He reckoned that the winner got loads from his spuds this way. Of course the story may have changed over the years (LOL) but is it feasible?
My brother was telling me about growing potatoes sideways in tires. I'm gonna try it this year. You take a tire, fill it with soil, put the spud in at the rim, training the vine part toward the outside of the rim, add another tire, fill with soil repeat all the process until you have all the tires you want. the foliage gets the sunlight it needs while the spuds grow inside the tires sideways. not sure how its gonna work, but as I said, I"m gonna try it this year.

When the season is over, put a large tarp down and dump the tires on it so you can save the soil. collect your potatoes and done.

Are tyres not carcinogenic? I know that there is a problem just now with 3G/4G rubber crumb pitches. The rubber crumb is manufactured from used car tyres.
