banana shallots - only from seed?

I bought some banana shallots in the veg section while shopping at Lidl today - having so far failed with Piglet's seeds (though I have a few left which I will sow soon).

I was wondering, can I plant some of the bought ones to allow them to go to seed or is it not worth it? I think I recall that they don't bunch like regular shallots.

Tried them last year - most rotted - the others went straight to seed except there wasn't actually any seed !
Still perhaps they would grow better somewhat south of here.

You should be fine with them Shirl. Plant them out in April.

Mine looked good for ages - then went to seed like Don's!

Several of our Plotters have tried Lidl shallots for planting, but most died off. I suspect that they may have had an anti-sprouting treatment.

Boy did this thread change while I was picking Madmax up from work and eating our dinner!

Thanks for all the input folks. I will keep said shallots till April and see if they show signs of sprouting and take it from there. In the meantime I will sow the last of Piglet's seed and see if I have better luck this year

I'd have thought that at least the bit about Lidl not stocking seeds yet might have made it through?
