  • Willow trees / cuttings.

I was watching gardeners world a while back (3 weeks ago maybe) and Toby and Alice were making willow obelisk for plants. I was wondering if anyone has tried it? I was also wondering whether anyone here would be able to suggest where i can get some willow cuttings from? The nurseries i've tried haven't produced anything so far. I believe Toby mentioned that a cutting could be bought for as little is 50p and was called a slip?

If anyone can shed some light on this conundrum please let me know.

I'm not sure about 50p, but this site does hedging , and there are some willow on there for about £1.50.

Walk along a river bank in the spring ,armed with a pair of secataurs, find a willow tree and cut some "withies", thin shoots of willow about two feet long. Put them in a bucket of water and in no time they'll have roots on them.
When you plant them remember to water well all summer and autumn.

That sounds great Polly but my knowledge of what a willow tree looks like minus leaves is a problem! To be honest my knowledge of trees is very limited any recommendations on literature/websites?

Late spring/early summer will do! If all fails I can send some shoots from my willow cave, grown from withies five years ago

Just seen this thread, you can get setts (cuttings) of a variety of willows, green red yellow stemmed etc suitable for all sorts of uses, from us - . You can also buy 6-8ft rods that you stick in the ground and will create a living fence (fedge). The setts cost £28 for 50 (thats 56p) inc p&p.
