National Trust making allotments available on NT land
Would be great if this were to happen! There is lots of NT land near here, however most of it is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Or somesuch. Cant see anyone letting us dig it up to grow spuds
"[NT] managers around the country have been asked to consider land for allotments.
The land could be on existing farms or kitchen gardens or even park land and is likely to be used by members of the local community. The details of how the land is allocated and managed has yet to be decided.
However, because a lot of the land is listed or of special scientific interest it could prove a legal minefield in many parts of the country."

can confirm that they are keeping their word- our parish council has/is setting up allotments on NT land- they are just getting up and running now after about a years worth of talking and planning applications. Another village on the same trust estate is also trying to do the same- i expect them to be successful.
so there you go, there is hope
our site is farmland, which required change of use planning permission, not sure about the other village. However they have had massive objections as well as support, so i wouldnt be surprised if some estates moot the idea and then bin it when they realise the agro it will cause!
caught this report on the radio this morning.
national trust to provide allotment space at 40 of it's properties.
small plots for family growers and larger plots for community projects.
wouldn't mind a nice plot at calke abbey myself...........
but good luck to those who get them, about time local councils got of there a**e and did more

heard on the news that the national trust are to give some land over for allotments. They then showed a place where they already do this for people with learning difficultys and others.I got the impression that they would be doing more allotment letting in the future.Anyone know any more about their plans?
There will be 1000 allotments available for anyone in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Waiting list is 100,000+ Land will be available from the Landshare website. Cannot see the National Trust for Scotland releasing land.
The National trust has announced that they'll be offering 1000 new allotment plots to rent. Given that they're Britian's biggest landowner, it may be that they'll offer more in the future if these ones are eagerly snapped up (which I'm guessing they will be).
There are only around 300,000 alootments today, and there were 1.4 million in the 1940s which is also, as you might expect, when we had the healthiest diet in the history of the UK.
The plots are available through the Landshare scheme.
Hello Jeannine, good to see you
That's exciting news from the NT, they're a massive land-owner in this country so in a great poisition to do this. It may well encourage other land-owners to follow suit, which can only be a good thing.
