Greetings just your friendly Muslim pirate...

This is how i grew potatoes in used soil bags.. i like to keep things really simple, because growing really is that simple.

I dint have the room in the garden to grow spuds in the ground..

I dont bother with certified seed potatoes either, i just buy the regular bag of spuds from the corner shop and select the ones that are healthy...

dont forget the holes to let the water out.. using a screwdriver



roll the bag down and add 2 inch of soil inside and make sure there are no air pockets in the corners

give them a good watering



i had 2 spuds in one bag. but i moved one of them to another bag



nice and healthy, as the vines get taller start adding soil and rolling the sleeve of the bag up a little



after a while they look like this

the latter ones are a bit knobbly ( who cares) infrequent watering.. i scattered some slug and snail killer in the used bags.. but nothing else... NO nutrients..

Its always good to stagger your spud grow, start chitted spuds every 2 weeks so you can harvest a little bit at a time instead of getting loads of spuds all in one harvest...

I have never used certified potatoes or ever bought them.. i just select the ones that look healthy from a bag of spuds i bought from a shop, i always make sure it says "produce of uk" though, they grow in uk they will grow in my garden

I did the same thing, but didn't use actual potatoes - just the sprouting bits cut off from potatoes I was peeling. I then left them in and harvested long long after the foliage had died down [in november I think].

Its a great and easy way of growing them, isn't it! You've got good yields there and good sizes.

Muslimgrower, from your photographs I gather you roll the bag up as the stalks grow and cover the growing spuds with the bag. Do you also cover them with soil or compost as they grow, like earthing up is done when they grow in the ground?

You say NO nutrients - does that mean you did absolutely nothing except water them? That sounds good to me, also the idea of starting a few every two weeks.

Love your photographs, especially the ones of the resulting spuds - beautiful.
