Spring onions - get sowing now!!!

My first modules were sown at the begining of January and will be ready to be planted out in a couple of weeks.

there is a distinct lack of modules in my house!!! so i cut 20 loo rolls in half

Yup - you can also use cardboard strips in seed trays to separate the pinches of seed and keep their roots apart.

Mine have gone tonight. I have sown Ishikura and Spring North Holland Blood Red.
Placed on window sill until they have germinated then will put them in unheated greenhouse.

I followed this method by planting in a cold frame on my kitchen top and all seems well. All have germinated and are around 3 inches long but none are vertical, is this right? Should I put them on the patio in the cold frame?

Yes, I would do that. They won't be vertical because they're indoors and they'll be drawn to the light from the window. I put mine in yesterday - they are in the cold greenhouse. Colder but light from all sides.

Still have some out on the lottie that have overwintered, just shows how hardy they are. Didn't use them in autumn as they looked so small and weedy they are now quite bit so ave kept growing through the winter. Have planted some in pots since xmas but will try some in modules this weekend. The modules are cheap in Wilko 99p for either 3 or 5 can't remember number.

Cheers Flummery - will have to assemble the Aldi coldframe I bought the other week and get me onions in there.

I don't have anywhere under cover that has light from all sides - I just have to turn my seed trays regularly and hope the seedlings don't turn into corkscrews!

Thanks for the reminder PW. I am going to sow Ishikura. Has anyone tried this variety?
I am also going to wait and sow as per the moon phase. Last year I did another variety and can't remember what it was, but they turned out ok. Will only sow a few as I don't have enough room.

Hi Herbie, Yes - I grew Ishikura last year and they were a great success am going to grow them again this year too!

Asdas "Tiger Paws" Rolls with home grown spring onions & extra mature cheddar cheese - CORRRRRR - making me hungry!

I also planted them around my carrots (chantennay red cored 2) last year, as i heard that the smell of the onions deters the carrot root fly & i'm happy to say that my carrots were great, & didnt have a problem with the root fly - so thats something i'll be doing again this year too!
