  • Trouble with Fothergills

    Hi all,
just wondering if anyone else has had any trouble with their orders from Fothergills this year? I've used them for years and years with no problem but boy this year!! I placed an order 27th December, over £70 worth of stuff. First they overcharged me for an Tayberry which should have been on offer price of 4.95, they charged me 9.95. Then, when my spuds turned up the shallots weren't there. I phoned and explained, the girl said she'd re-order shallots and put the money back into my account straight away. A week later no money, so phoned again. The lady said 3.95 had been added to my Fothergills account, but no notes about the shallots. So, I said no, it should be £5 and back into my bank account. After waiting ages, then she called someone over to help her, evetually she said it was sorted, great I thought.
Checked my account over a week later and still no money in my bank account. SO, phoned again, explained that I was getting a little fed up with this not being sorted and could I talk to a superviser or head office. She assured me she would sort it out. Again, she didn't seem to understand what had gone on. Simple, re-send my missing shallots, and reimburse me my £5. I never spoke rudely to her and kept very friendly as I think it's the best way to sort these things out, but she quickly said 'it's sorted, good-bye' and put the phone down! So I phoned back immediately and explained what had just happened, and how the other 2 ladies hadn't sorted all this out, and it was getting beyond a joke now. Again, it was a total cock up. She said it was all sorted but over a week later my money is not in my account although she said it would be done straight away. I'm really peed off about this, ok, the computer cocked the Tayberry price up, and somebody forgot to put the shallots in with the order, but it's the sheer inability to sort these simple problems out afterwards that's unbelievable. I can't get past the people on the 'help' desk, there is no complaints department and I can't get through to head office, what now??? I don't know quite what to do, apart from never use them again!!! Any advise guys?
    many thanks
    Eden

Sit down and have a nice cup of tea.
It sounds like a stressful time you have had.
I would call them and cancel your remaining order and ask for your money back otherwise you will be calling trading standards.

Yes the thought of trading standards usually pulls them up short! Also I would tell them you have contacted the Sunday Times!

Thank-you tattie-man, I have managed to keep very calm about all this but crickey, they don't half know how to wind folks up!! I never thought they would be as useless as this. I'll be phoning in the morning and telling them I shall be contacting trading standards. Unfortunately all of my order arrived, well, apart from the shallots they still haven't turned up yet but are paid for.
        again, thank-you

I think that's the problem with a lot of companies Eden. As long as everything goes smoothly the service is excellent. But if an error occurs there is no mechanism within the system to deal with it. It's not that the people on the phones are unhelpul or idiots - it's that there is no mechanism in their system to deal with the problem, as much to their frustration as yours.
I do hope you get it sorted out.

i had a problem with a certain bed company, would give our money back, less 20%,so i quoted trading standards and watch dog,it worked,1 week after the bed was collected, the money was in the bank, result, like you i was always polite,as it's not the fault of the girl on the phone,or ask for a senior operative.

Hello! Well, I phoned again and asked very nicely if I could speak to a supervisor as I had an ongoing problem that hadn't been dealt with properly. The lady said she would deal with it, I said I'd heard that 4 times before and it still wasn't sorted. She did agree to give me the number of head office, which was good. She asked if she could help again so I said if she could have a look on the system to see what was going on. The shallots were sorted but she said the money still hadn't been refunded, as the guy that does the refunds was stuck in Lincoln. I said I've been waiting for the refund for a month now, ooops! Had he really been stranded for that long?? I said that I was fed up with all the excuses and if this wasn't dealt with I'd be contacting Trading Standards. She then assured me that she would personally make sure it was sorted first thing Monday morning. I said I was so disappointed with them, but I would be taking this further if it wasn't sorted, and I'd be talking to head office, so, we'll see!!! Fingers crossed hey!

Tell them they're not the only seed merchant in the world!

And thet you have made your unfortunate experience known to the rest of the people on your allotment (whether it's true or not!)

Sorry to hear about your troubles.Unfortunately numpty heads are everywhere.
About 3 years ago I ordered some miniature roses from Parkers.Everything's fine,but...one of the "miniatures" is 3' high
It doesn't bother me,but I dont think they should sell them as "miniatures".
As for Fothergills,I'm not too impressed with them-I tried their seeds several times and the germination wasn't good at all,so I stopped using them.
                    Maybe I was just unlucky...
