Heritage pea in March GYO

I was going through my seeds this morning sorting out what I can get underway now when I came across a packet of pea seeds I bought last year in Holland and noted the name Ezetha's Blauwschok. For some reason it jogged a memory so I came indoors and did a search on here - one reference from a couple of years ago. Checked the March magazine and there is mention on p13 of Ezeta's Krombek Blauwschokker - singing its praises.

Do you think my seeds are the same variety with just a slight name difference due to them being bought in Holland?

Now the numpty question, have I got it right that heritage varieties will stay true even if they are saved from plants grown near other varieties of pea?

Sounds like the same variety to me, Shirley - and yes, it's got a good write up too...

You needn't worry about peas crossing, I don't think - you have to try quite hard in order to make them cross, in fact - just ask Flum, who spent quite a bit of last summer interferring with her peas' bits!

HSL usually send out 10 of tall pea seeds Shirley It was enough to eat some and save some last year.

Heritage doesn't mean that the plants will necessarily come true the following year, it depends on the type of plant. However they will be open pollinated so if you make sure that they aren't contaminated by other pollen then they can be saved and will come true. Peas however are very easy to save. Any open pollinated type will almost certainly come true as they flowers are usually pollinated before they actually flower (if you see what I mean). French beans are also very easy but runners and broad beans are more difficult and have to be separated either by distance of barriers.

I was pleased to see they get a good write-up - I bought some at Ryton Gardens the other week, having spotted them in the Garden Organic catalogue. Like Shirl's Dutch seeds, they are labelled slightly differently ("Ezetha's Krombek Blauwschok") but I'm sure they're the same thing. I love mangetout - now I'm looking forward to getting a purple tongue

They arrived today, all snug and sound - where did you get that small packet from, can I get them in the UK, would be great for seed swapping here in my garden group?

I got mine from the Organic Catalogue - but IIRC they were one of the varieties that Garden Organic source from Sainte Marthe, so presumably grown in France - maybe you can get some from a French website, Tony?

Don't need them now, I'll grow on the seeds Shirley sent and will save the resulting seeds for next year.

Seriously pean and beaned out now, found the other seed box today - at the back of the garage - and have soooooooooo many pea and bean seeds, almost fetishistic

Must try to get some small packets to send seeds off to people
