  • Can i do it!

I have on my deck a grow bag which has some very healthy looking savoy cabbages growing in it.

They have been in the grow bag since they started growing at the beginning of the season.

They are a fair size now and i notice that they are wanting to heart up.

Only problem is there isnt enough soil around the stalks and its going to be a bit difficult to earth them up without loosing the soil because of the wind and the rain.

Can i move them? I was thinking about taking the whole grow bag upto a free spot in one of my raised beds and simply slipping the grow bag out the put some good soil around them to bed them down.

Do you think i can do this without upsetting the plants?

I speak with the experience of one who has never successfully grown a cabbage (everything drowned last year)

If they will not develop any more where they are then I would try moving them. I am not sure that they need particularly deep soil but know they need the soil to be firm around the stalks.

I am sure someone who has grown a cabbage will be along and advise properly shortly

      Hi Shirley

Well the soil around them sure is firm in the grow bag, why do grow bags go like blocks of concrete!!!

I think i will move them tonight, it would just be a shame to loose them. I also have peas in grow bags and they are doing just fine, started to pod which suggests they are happy.

The cabbages look happy enough, though the bottom leaves have gone a bit yellow but the rest of the plant looks good.

      Oh hum, decisions decisions!!

If they look happy I would leave well alone. The bottom leaves always seem to go yellow (well the ones on my broccoli did and I still had great crops - year before last)

i'd move one and see if it makes a difference, if it starts to look sick, don't move the others and have that one for tea (well i wouldn't cos i hate cabbage, but i'm gonna grow some for the chooks this year)
