I'm thinking I should also feed my beans, since it's been 6 weeks or so since planting. But mine aren't anywhere near flowering, never mind beans. The only thing I have right now is tomato feed. Would that be good or a waste to give them some of that right now?

As you may have read from her post, listed above, Zazen has given some tomato feed, also her comment on watering made me realise I'd been a bit lax about it, so I've made sure they have plenty water since, without drowning them out.

They got an organic tomato and chilli feed put into their saucers last week, and the amount of water they soak up every day is phenomenal.

ETA a photo - was doing the washing up and spotted the first beans.

Whoo, well done! Mine are in flower - looking gorgeous - they're purple teepee so the flowers are purple too. I keep getting asked what my unusual plant is. 5 beans doesn't seem to satisfy! I still have to explain!

Thanks Frannie, I did miss that post, but also thought that tomato feed would only be good if they were already in flower. I'll give it a shot.

            Somthing's happening!!!

The two French beans that showed at first are actually doing something at last - having stood there with just two true leaves for weeks, they've actually grown a bit and are starting - just starting - to grow a few more (tiny) true leaves. They look a lot better as well.

I moved them to a warmer place last week, they're near a radiator at night with very low heat for an hour or two, it's made a big difference.

Best of all the other four seeds are starting to show above the compost now.

WAHOO - way to go maytree.

I picked my first 3 tonight...photo attached. We had them with carrots as part of our roast dinner. They are the yellow dwarfs from Two-sheds' beans.

Yay, you should get a trophy - I think you're the first in the French-beans-on-windowsill-project to get actual produce.

Congratulations and hope you enjoyed your beans.

                    They were lovely.

My prize...persuading the OH that having beans all year round in pots might be a good idea...

                    • Mine will be a few weeks before they grace a plate but they aren't bad. They are a purple teepee bean - just colouring up at the tips as you can see.

Just thought I would let you know, most of my seeds good 90% germinated and so far no losses due to damping off or anything else! The first lot of tomatoes and chillis sown back in January are all thriving in my greenhouse now.

Second lot of chilis are still indoors, I sowed them less than a month ago but they will soon be potted on and hardened off, then will go and join the others in the greenhouse

                          • My beans have just got their flowers.. can't remember the variety, but they're a tall growing purple bean (not teepee).

                            • I have beans!! And the couple of extra seeds I planted in the pot a couple of weeks ago to make up for the two that didn't come up first go have also popped up and are already looking like they are forming tiny flower buds.

                              • We've had two meals from ours! Just one smaller batch to fatten up. I shall definitely do this again next year - and more of them too!
