  • Hollow onions?

    OK, I'm puzzled.

Harvested all my spring planted onion sets on Sunday.
They were heavily infested with dandelions of uo to one foot diameter.

About five or six in no particular place order were hollow rootless shells with a brown slimey lining. They looked fine until I went to pick them up.

    Question is, what did it?

Quite afew of mine were affected with botrytis, but not as bad as yours by the sound of it! Being a fungal disease the roots had rotted off. but all I did was use these affected onions first and cut off the bad parts. Intend to sterilise soil in onion trench and burn all affected onion residue.

I imagine its the damp, warm weather that has triggered the fungal problems.

I aint no expert so I could be wrong though!

Hi Peter, would not advise you to plant onions or any of the allium family in that particular piece of ground for a couple of years. When did you plant them? Perhaps they were left in the ground too long.
