  • Bah! Potato Problems

My Christmas New Potato project has failed

Nothing had sprouted, so when I dug a little, I found the potatoes I had planted had gone all mouldy!

I'd used supermarket Charlotte potatoes, in compost in large tubs... not quite sure what I've done wrong.

Is it too late to start again? Am I still ok to use supermarket potatoes, or should I get them from somewhere else (where?)

    Cheers!

Hmmm - mine aren't up either. I'll have a look at them when I get home tonight to see what's happening.

I think Carlingford is one of the seed potatoes best used.
I would imagine the probem with using shop bought tatties is that they are dug slightly imature and will not sprout. I tried Jersey royals earlier in the year and they just rotted because they had been sent to the shops imature Unless you are very knowledeable in these matters( which I am not!) in this instance I would plumb for bona-fidi seed potatoes for Christmas cropping!

Some supermarket potatoes are treated with a chemical to stop the potatoes from sprouting so that could be your problem. It improves shelf life(nice to know what you eat isn't it) Best to get reputable seed from a merchant

just had a look at mine. One lot seem to be just getting going with tiny little shoots coming out, one lot haven't done a thing, the others I only put in this weekend so maybe a little early to look at them!

Main thing is none are moldy. Looks like you've just had rotten luck OWG! (Sorry, couldn't resist).

I have seed potatoes from Dobies variety Nicola, planted two weeks ago and looking great but everyone else at the allotments thinks I am mad! Going away for two weeks on Sunday so going to cover them with some fleece cloches and keep my fingers crossed....

                              Hi OWG

I also found some at back of cupboard 2 weeks ago, put into pot of compost and they are now 2 inches high - have covered with more compost and have everything crossed but am not holding breath.
