As the plot is still frozen solid, nothing planted as yet apart from half a dozen potatoes in a large pot. Chitting first earlies at the moment as the potatoes we chitted then planted last year seemed to grow a lot better than those that hadn't been chitted.

Can't wait for the plot to 'defrost' as really want to get things moving.

My earlie will go in in mid March at the earliest, followed very prompty by the lates.

Its very early to plant and you will gain absolutely nothing but heartache and backache, over planting in a few weeks.

Mine are chitting in egg boxes. We are still thawing out, just clearing the last of the snow. Usually put mine in March, in containers in greenhouse if weather is still grotty, if weather is ok they go outside. Tried a variety from wilko last year, hopeless as I can't remember the variety but they were rubbish. This year have labelled everything

Last year I planted the first lot of potatoes on the 14th Feb, but it is that much colder this year. I will however put in one row tomorrow but only because I have plenty of seed. Nothing ventured nothing gained. I have some good plants that were sown in bags in the greenhouse a few days before Xmas. The foliage is nearly up to the rim of the bag, that is when it becomes more tricky to keep them frost free.

My first ones went in on 14 January, jersey royals. But then I do live in jersey and we are well early here!

Oh - how I agree about the spring ritual. What else can we do at this time of year?! I still have 4 inches of snow in the garden.

I used to know a chap(he died!)who used to religiously plant his first first earlies on Boxing Day....not sure what success he had & tis a bit late to find out now....but I imagine that as he continued the practise year in that he must have had some luck!?!
Us....probably put our first lot in in March.
