    Green side up Pete

If you can it may pay you to "pot" them up into cells for a strart & then plant these out later on next month if they are small. I always grow winter onions from sets for this reason.

Lol nice reply. I see your point on putting them in cells to get some more
      growth into them .

Nick, oh my gardening guru, I think I read somewhere (that's twice in one day!! done some reading that is!!) that root vegetables prefer to be "sown" directly into the ground. is that the case with onions? dexterdog

I don't grow Japanese from seed only sets but my normal onions I grow from seed sown in December & ricked out into cells & then potted on to keepe them growing & then planted out with no problems. Does that answer the question?

I would AJB as the roots will get matted together & when you seperate them they will get a slight check, if it's in November they won't have time to recover & if they 're not big enough to go out yet it's difficult anyway.

Pot them on then transplant them that way they wll have a bigger root ball & will be able to handle the wetter weather better - not much root & they could rot off as they are in constant water.
